It’s now July and the weather is hot in Dalyan, with blue skies every day,…
Recently there have been rallies and demonstrations in the Black Sea region of Artvin where open cast mining for gold has been started. This desecration of beautiful forested land is extremely unpopular especially as the process involves using mercury, which in turn pollutes the water supply of the rural area as well as the city.
The Save Iztuzu Platform decided the time had come to show support and solidarity for the people of Artvin and their sympathisers, so in early March a rally was organised on Iztuzu Beach to show the strength of feeling in the Dalyan area. Several hundred people from many parts of the Mugla region gathered to stage a peaceful demonstration of support for the cause.
Kaptan June and a number of her supporters/volunteers attended the event which was blessed with the most beautiful weather you could ask for.
There were speeches to make our feelings clear and Kaptan June was also asked to speak. She was the final speaker of the day and held the audience’s attention while she spoke of her involvement in creating the protected area of Köyceğiz-Dalyan so many years ago.
After delivering her speech in Turkish to an enthusiastic round of applause she then briefly repeated the main points in English for the benefit of the relatively small number of non-Turkish people in attendance.
Afterwards our Kaptan was very much in demand for photographs with various groups and individuals who really appreciate what she has achieved in the area.
